Launch of the Master’s Program in Water Diplomacy at Jordan University of Science and Technology
29 Jan 2025
Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) has launched the region’s first Master of Science in Water Diplomacy. Hosted by the Department of Civil Engineering and backed by the Water Diplomacy Center (WDC) under the Blue Peace Middle East Capacity Development Project, the program receives support from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). As an academic pillar of the Blue Peace Initiative, WDC is committed to advancing sustainable water management solutions through education and research. The program’s unique curriculum addresses the urgent need for skilled professionals in transboundary water management, emphasizing practical skills in diplomacy, international water law, and collaborative problem-solving. With a multidisciplinary approach, the program covers essential subjects in water resources engineering, law, negotiation, and environmental management, totaling 34 credit hours. Targeting students from Jordan and Blue Peace partner countries, the first call for applications was met with enthusiasm. Nine students were awarded scholarships: three from Syria, two from Iran, and three from Jordan. Two additional students—one from Jordan and one from Canada—have joined as self-funded participants. The program’s broad impact aims to prepare graduates for leadership roles in international organizations, government agencies, and NGOs, addressing pressing water challenges and promoting stability and cooperation in the Middle East and beyond. This innovate programme pushes the boundaries in critically examining what water diplomacy entails and how to improve its effectiveness in building more inclusive processes, leading to more genuine forms of cooperation and collaboration across and within nation-state borders. These students from across the region have begun the first steps in mitigating potential future tensions by developing their understanding and practice of various forms of water diplomacy, which prioritize the sharing of benefits, as well as the burdens, of cooperative transboundary water diplomacy and complex interconnections with governance and management.
