Jordanian-Syrian Joint Technical Water Committee Visits the Yarmouk Basin on the Jordanian Side
Members of the Jordanian-Syrian Joint Technical Water Committee visited the Yarmouk Basin and Al-Wehda Dam on the Jordanian side today, Tuesday, coinciding with the launch of the project “Updating the Hydropolitical Baseline Study of the Yarmouk Tributary of the Jordan River." with support from the Government of Switzerland, implemented by the Water Diplomacy Center, hosted at Jordan University of Science and Technology
The field visit took place with the participation of the Secretary General of the Jordan Valley Authority, Eng. Hisham AlHissah, the Deputy Minister of Energy of Syria, Eng. Osama Abu Zaid, and the WDC Director Prof Mutawakil Obeidat, along with a number of officials and experts from both the Jordanian and Syrian sides.
The tour included a visit to Al-Wehda Dam to review water storage conditions and the dam's importance in managing shared water resources, in addition to a visit to Umm Qais to explore the geographical and strategic significance of the Yarmouk Basin, as well as a visit to the water tunnel in the city of Umm Qais.
The visit aimed to assess the current water situation in the Yarmouk Basin, discuss the main challenges facing shared water resources, and explore technical solutions and cooperative mechanisms needed to strengthen sustainable water management in a way that serves the interests of both brotherly countries.
