Approaches to Align Water–Climate Resilience from the Regional to the Local Level
The Water Diplomacy Center participated in a high-level regional session titled “Approaches to Align Water–Climate Resilience from the Regional to the Local Level", held as part of Cairo Water Week. The session was organized by the Blue Peace Middle East initiative in partnership with the Government of Switzerland and Mercy Corps, and brought together policymakers, technical experts, and representatives of regional and international organizations to explore ways of aligning transboundary water diplomacy frameworks with local climate adaptation efforts.
the session, Dr. Mutawakil Obeidat, Director of the Water Diplomacy Center, emphasized the urgent need to close the gap between knowledge generation and implementation in addressing water and climate challenges. He noted that while extensive research exists across the region, mechanisms for translating this knowledge into coordinated action remain weak. Dr. Obeidat called for systematic cooperation between research institutions, government agencies, and practitioners on the ground, highlighting that the Center works to bridge this divide through capacity building that integrates technical expertise with diplomatic skills for transboundary cooperation.
The session was moderated by Eng. Alaa Al-Qaisi from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, and featured the participation of Eng. Zeina Majdalani, member of the Administrative Committee of Blue Peace Middle East; Ms. Nour Darwazeh from Mercy Corps; and Eng. Mufleh Alalaween, Regional Water Diplomacy Advisor at the Swiss Embassy in Amman.
The discussion highlighted regional and local experiences in aligning water diplomacy frameworks with climate adaptation efforts, stressing the importance of bridging the gap between regional dialogue and on-the-ground action, and strengthening cooperation and capacity-building platforms. The session also underscored the pivotal role of the Water Diplomacy Center, under the umbrella of the Blue Peace Middle East Initiative supported by the Swiss government, in advancing efforts to turn water into a tool for cooperation across the region.
