Regional Workshop on the Management of the Al-Hawizeh and Al-Adhim Marshes
The city of Erbil, Iraq, hosted the second workshop of the Cooperative Assessment and Management of the Al-Hawizeh/Al-Adhim Marshes Project (CAMAAM), implemented by the Queen Rania Center for Environmental Science and Technology and supported by the Water Diplomacy Center at Jordan University of Science and Technology through the Blue Peace Middle East Capacity Development Project, funded by the Swiss Government.
The workshop, held from 20–22 September 2025, brought together a distinguished group of academics and experts from Iraq, Iran, Jordan, and Switzerland. The sessions focused on the participatory mapping of Causal Loop Diagrams (CLDs) to better understand the environmental and social challenges facing the marsh ecosystem.
The project aims to develop a shared assessment and vision for the governance of the Al-Hawizeh and Al-Adhim Marshes through a multidisciplinary evaluation of surface and groundwater resources, as well as studying the impacts of climate change on the marshes' water resources. The ultimate goal is to establish a decision-support system that enhances marsh management and contributes to their ecological restoration.
Participants included representatives from Tarbiat Modares University (Iran), University of Thi-Qar (Iraq), the Geneva Water Hub (Switzerland), and Jordan University of Science and Technology (Jordan). Prominent speakers also joined the event, including Professor Masoumeh Ebtekar from Iran and Professor Anthony Turton from South Africa, who delivered virtual contributions.
