Supported by the Water Diplomacy Center: German Jordanian University Implements Water Harvesting Dam Project in Wadi Hassan, Al-Azraq.
17 Mar 2025
The German Jordanian University has implemented a water harvesting dam project in Wadi Hassan, Al-Azraq, as part of the cross-border cooperation project to study the Azraq basalt basin, supported by the Water Diplomacy Center and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation. A delegation from the WDC represented by Prof. Mutawakil Obeidat, Director of the Water Diplomacy Center, and Prof. Mohammed Al-Azzam, BPME Project Lead, and Ms. Haneen Abualhayjaa visited the project site on Thursday, March 13, 2025. During the visit, the delegation listened to a briefing from Dr. Qasem Abdel Aal, the project manager, and Engineer Fadi Alsaeed from the Islamic Network for Development and Management of Water Resources, who explained the technical details of the construction and the expected benefits in terms of enhancing groundwater recharge and serving the local community in Al-Azraq. The delegation also visited the meteorological monitoring station of the Ministry of Water and Irrigation in Al-Azraq and reviewed the equipment in the station, as well as the devices installed by the German Jordanian University team as part of the project to continuously measure rainfall and valley flow. The delegation also visited other projects implemented in the region by the Islamic Network. The cross-border cooperation in studying the Al-Azraq basalt basin aims to improve groundwater recharge processes and study water patterns represented by rainfall, surface runoff, and evaporation, through the development of advanced measurement systems that are developed locally, to assess groundwater recharge quantities using numerical models and to study the impact of climate change on surface and groundwater.
