We are excited to invite you to the 8th Webinar in the WDC Learning Webinar Series, titled:

“Harnessing Nature-Based Solutions: Strategies for Water Security and Surface Water Management"

The webinar will be delivered by Dr. Qasem Abdelal, Associate Professor at the German Jordanian University (GJU) and Water Diplomacy Center Associate. This webinar is part of the Blue Peace Middle East Capacity Development Project, funded by the Swiss Government.

About the Webinar:
As climate variability intensifies, conventional water infrastructure alone is no longer sufficient to ensure water security. This webinar explores the role of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) in surface water management, focusing on approaches that naturally regulate water flows, enhance groundwater recharge, mitigate flood risks, and improve water availability for downstream communities.

The session will feature the Wadi Hassan leaky dam in the Al-Azraq Basin as a practical case study, demonstrating how Nature-Based Solutions integrate with open-source numerical modeling, advanced meteorological and basin instrumentation, and collaborative stakeholder frameworks. It will also highlight the broader socio-environmental and transboundary benefits of incorporating natural infrastructure into water resources management.

About the Speaker:
Dr. Qasem Abdelal is an Associate Professor at the German Jordanian University (GJU) and a Water Diplomacy Center Associate. He holds a Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Virginia Tech. His research focuses on water resources management, water quality, hydrological modeling, flood management, and innovative approaches to reducing water evaporation.
