The Water Diplomacy Center Organises a Professinal Training for the Syrian and Jordanian Delegation
The Water Diplomacy Center at Jordan University of Science and Technology organized an advanced training session on Thursday, September 25, 2025, for the Syrian delegation from the Ministry of Energy and the Jordanian delegation from the Ministry of Water and Irrigation. This was held as part of the joint technical workshop between Jordan and Syria on Integrated Water Resources Management, convened in Amman, the capital, over five days in cooperation with World Vision International.
The training program aimed to enhance participants' understanding of transboundary water management concepts, the principles of water diplomacy, and stakeholder engagement mechanisms, in ways that contribute to developing joint water policies and fostering regional cooperation to address the challenges of water scarcity and climate change.
Prof. Mutawakil Obeidat, WDC Director, gave an introductory presentation on the Center's activities in research, education, fellowship programs, and its pioneering master's program—the first of its kind in the Middle East under the Blue Peace Middle East project, supported by the Government of Switzerland. Prof. Wasim Barham, the Education lead, emphasized the significance of transboundary waters, their relationship to the Sustainable Development Goals, and the challenges they present. Prof. Mohammad Al-Azzam, the Project Lead, discussed the foundations of water diplomacy and its role in conflict resolution and achieving sustainable management.
The training also included a practical exercise on stakeholder mapping, supervised by Prof. Obeidat and Eng. Atheer Talafha, to promote dialogue and build partnerships.
Members of both delegations expressed their appreciation for the level and practical content of the training, stressing the importance of such initiatives in developing the technical and administrative capacities of staff and enhancing bilateral cooperation between Jordan and Syria in water governance and climate change adaptation.
This workshop marks a significant milestone for the Water Diplomacy Center, reflecting its mission as a leading scientific and academic institution in capacity-building and knowledge transfer, and underscoring its role as a driver of regional dialogue and a laboratory for Arab cooperation in addressing water and climate challenges.
